The Golf Course

The first hole is a 425 yard Par 4, stroke index 7. Relatively straight with a sloping fairway from right to left with out of bounds dominating the right hand side of the fairway. Trees to the left make this one of the tightest holes on the course.

A challenging opening hole that plays its full length and a long drive is essential for the green to be considered. With a green sloping from back to front, it is wise to favour the right side of the fairway off the tee.

The second hole is a 507 yard par 5 and it is Stroke Index 5 on the scorecard. Be sure to stay left on this hole as out of bounds runs all the way down the right hand side of the fairway. To make matters worse the fairway slopes from left to right.

A splendid par 5, with a fairway sloping from left top right, reachable for the long hitter, with 2 good shots. Trouble in the form of out of bounds lurks all the way down the right, for the shorter hitter the second and third shots will roll from the left side onto a green that runs quickly from the front edge.

The 3rd hole is a 322 yard Par 4, stroke index 13. This is not one of the most difficult holes on the course, yet it does have its fair share of out of bounds and heavy rough. A good drive should see you in good shape to a short iron to the green.

A gentle dogleg to the right, the hole requires a precise drive. The green has numerous pin positions, placing importance on club selection. The hole is lined with trees, especially strong on the right side of the fairway – nobody plays well out of trees.

The 4th hole is a 574 yard Par 5, stroke index 1, the longest hole on the course. A very open fairway with a fairway bunker down the right hand side. This hole has a slight dog leg from left to right, and the large green features a steep bank on the right.

There are spectacular views across this dogleg right, especially from the back tee, The tee shot is played to a fairway, which is bordered by trees and bracken. The two tiered green has a pronounced slope at the front and is well protected on both sides. A long par 5 has obvious charm but with hidden dangers to errant approaches. A par is well earned and a birdie savoured.

The fifth hole is a 141 yard Par 3, stroke index 15. This hole is surrounded by deep bunkers and features a tricky contoured green, one of the fastest on the course.

A delightful short hole played to a raised green, seemingly on the horizon, and difficult to judge the distance by feel. Wide at the back of the green, there is only a small area at the front of the green. A par 3 is always welcome.

The 6th hole is a 342 yard Par 4, stroke index 9. This is one of the easiest Par 4's on the course but be sure to miss the bunkers on the left of the fairway and the green. Also beware of the large tree on the right hand side. This is probably the last thing you want to be standing behind on your second shot.

A short par 4, with a tee shot tightly guarded by a large bunker on the left side of the fairway and trees down the right. Making any approach shot difficult to judge to an undulating green.

The 7th hole is a 462 yard Par 4, stroke index 3. The 7th hole is one of the most demanding Par 4's on the course. It is relatively straight and will take two very good shots to reach the green, which in summer is lightening fast. Be sure to stay straight as bunkers on the right of the fairway can cause numerous problems.

The 8th is a 173 yard Par 3, stroke index 17. Although a relatively high stroke index, the 8th is a very tricky hole. Bunkers left and right, protect a very tight raised green. Accuracy is the key to this hole.

Recognised as a classic short hole, over bracken and bunkers, to a narrow green which rises steeply from the front edge. Good shots will be rewarded but missing the green leaves a difficult chip from every side.

The 9th hole is a 328 yard Par 4, stroke index 11. This hole is very straight with bunkers down the right hand side of the fairway and a lot of trees and gorse bushes on either side. A straight drive should keep you out of trouble on this hole.

Hugely difficult off the tee, it requires a straight drive played to the fairway below. Avoid the right side of the fairway as it is littered with bunkers and trouble. The green although relatively flat is difficult to read and there is no easy pitch from either side. For most golfers par is a great result.

The 10th hole is a 161 yard Par 3, stroke index 14. Relatively straight forward with bunkers surrounding the green. The green is very tricky and slopes from the back to the front. Wayward tee shots can be punished with heavy rough on both sides of the hole.

A challenging tee shot that has to carry over 150 yards to the front of the green, which is well protected by bunkers at the front and on both sides. A high bank at the back of green tempts one to under club, which will bring the front bunker into play and from which escape, without damage, is rare.

The 11th hole is a 367 yard Par 4, stroke index 4, the only hole which has a blind tee shot. The fairway is very narrow to start with but opens up after about 150 yards. Bad tee shots will make it extremely hard to make Par on this hole which has plenty of bunkers and rough.

The drive is played over the brow of a small hill to a fairway that turns from right to left between deep swathes of trees and bracken, the narrow green has grass banking to its left and a steep run off to the right. Two challenging shots that, when successful, give great satisfaction.

The 12th hole is a 359 yard Par 4, stroke index 8. Slight dog leg to the left with a very open fairway. Trees down the right can cause problems. The green is elevated and it is very difficult to judge the pin placement from the fairway.

An accurate tee shot is required , the golfer needs a drive that tends to draw – but not too close to the left edge. The green is raised , with severe slopes on all sides, and the shorter the approach shot the easier it is to run off the green. Running a ball on to the green is rarely successful.

The 13th hole is a 314 yard Par 4, stroke index 16. A beautiful raised tee area is the main feature of this hole. Out of bounds to the right and heavy rough can cause problems, and the long two-tier green is very tight and close to the course boundary.

Aim well left off the tee, this shot can often catch many golfers out. Anywhere on the fairway is a good result for most players. The fairway turns right and uphill for the last 150 yards with only the top of the pin visible for the second shot. Bunkers lie on both sides of the fairway, accuracy is a premium with your approach, and a par 4 rarely loses the hole.

The 14th hole is a 505 yard Par 5, stroke index 6. There is a lot of trouble either side of the fairway, however with two very good shots, the green can be hit. The green is one of the most demanding on the course and has a huge left to right swing. This hole leads directly to the clubhouse.

Two big shots can reach the hole albeit the fairway is very narrow when approaching the green. Shorter hitters need to plan their route carefully to avoid the fairway bunkers and, with a long green sloping left to right, any chip is difficult to get close to the pin.

The 15th hole is a 212 yard Par 3, stroke index 12. This is the hardest Par 3 on the course and with the wind against can easily become a par 4. Bunkers surrounding the green make this one of the hardest Par 3's in Yorkshire.

Consistent with the other holes on the course, the tee shot has to fly on to the green over banks and bunkers. The green inline with the tee is protected by bunkers on the left and right and a steep slope on the back.

The 16th hole is a 447 yard Par 4, stroke index 2. The 16th is the second hardest hole on the course. The fairway is very wide and runs downhill to a two tier green. Similar to the 15th, when the wind is against you, this hole can even make a tough Par 5!

A long straight drive is needed to hit the fairway that drops from the ridge down to a receptive MacKenzie style green. Classical greenside bunkers add to this hole's difficulty. This is a demanding hole which plays into the prevailing wind. Par on this hole will feel like a birdie!

The 17th hole is a 170 yard Par 3, stroke index 18. The hole is played up-hill to a green surrounded by sand. The green itself is probably the fastest and hardest on the course. If you are putting downhill it can be very difficult to judge speed and alignment.

A full shot that finishes near the pin, on the top level, is one to enjoy. The ball has to carry the full distance avoiding the surrounding bunkers with a long slope towards the front of the green and one is often faced with a long and difficult putt. If the pin is at the back of the green.

The 18th hole is a 532 yard Par 5, stroke index 10. Slight dog leg to the right, with a very wide fairway makes this one of the easier Par 5's. Trouble comes in the shape of trees and surrounding bunkers. Similar to the 17th, the 18th has a very tricky green, which is very hard to judge. This hole leads directly to the clubhouse.

A finishing hole to settle a match or determine a medal. Long hitters may try to reach in two, but for the majority the second shot should be played down the left hand side of the fairway to leave an approach shot from around 100 yards to a green that slopes heavily from back to front. Avoiding a bogey is often a good result and a birdie will always please.
